Do you want to talk?
Is your life not quite as you want it to be? Do you have marriage or relationship problems or questions on sexual issues? Are you recently divorced or bereaved? Is anxiety ruining your life?
Most of us go through life without too many major problems. But occasionally we have a challenge we can't sort out and we may not wish to talk about it to family and friends. This is where counsellors come in. We are trained to help you find clarity and decide your way forward. You have already taken the first step to changing by visiting this site. If you're ready, why not contact me to see if I can help. |
Does counselling work?
Some people are sceptical about whether counselling is effective. The answer is "Yes, it does - most of the time". To be successful you need to be prepared to put in the effort, to find a counsellor who suits you, and to be realistic in the expected outcome.
Organisations including the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) have funded research projects to measure the efficacy of counselling. Results show that in most cases counselling is not only effective, but also may help to prevent future poor mental or physical health. A couple of typical reports are included below. |
- Evaluation Therapeutic Effectivess in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Counselling Resource)
- Effectiveness of Counselling (BACP)
Is this you?
"I have been with someone for 8 years now, but we always seem to be arguing. What's wrong with us?"
"I don't think I am good enough for anybody. I always seem to make a mess of potential relationships and push away people that I like. Why am I like this?
"My daughter's 17 year old son has told her that he's gay. She doesn't know if she should tell her husband and I am not sure I want to see my grandson again. I feel what he says he is, is wrong."
Simply saying the issue out loud can help you start to feel better. I cannot solve your problems for you - only you can do that. I will not judge, but will be there to support and help you find the solutions that work for you.
What happens in a counselling session?
First meeting
We explore the issues you would like help with and discuss possible ways forward. You can decide if I am the right counsellor for you and I will confirm if I think I can help you. If we're both happy, you can book some further meetings. |
Following sessions
We talk in depth about the concerns you have, what might have caused them, and what steps you can take to help you feel better. I may ask you to do some short, easy exercises between sessions - for example, keeping a diary of events or emotions. |
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on how complex and severe your issues are, and also how much time and effort you yourself put into the process. We can review your progress each week, and you can stop at any time - you are always in control. |
Fees
My fee is £80 for each 50 minute session.
However, if you are a student or on income support, I will also be happy to discuss a fee appropriate to your circumstances.
